Adaptive brewing is a concept whereby people with different abilities are provided the opportunity to participate in homebrewing activities regardless of physical or mental abilities as a result of accident or injury, military service wounds, genetics or disease processes. An adaptive brewer can participate by themselves, if appropriate, or more commonly with a Brew Buddy.
Homebrewing is a social activity and best enjoyed with others.
A Brew Buddy is typically an able-bodied person who assists the adaptive brewer in completing certain brewing tasks. The Brew Buddy, often an experienced homebrewer, mentors and encourages the advancement of knowledge and skills, collaborates on equipment and process adjustments or modifications that enable the Adaptive Brewer to participate to the fullest extent possible.
Activity modifications are changes made to the brewing process that allow all brewers to have an equal or more equal chance of doing well. One example of a recreational activity modification is a wheelchair basketball game, where players use wheelchairs. The players' inability to walk is not a factor in how well they play.
In the brewing process, selection of an all-in-one brewing system is a great example. These systems are floor mounted and have a height and accessibility well-suited for a seated brewer to safely operate. BSG's Grainfather series, Anvil Brewing Equipment's Foundry™ series, are excellent examples of these systems our Adaptive Brewers have experience brewing on. There are more systems out there to check out. Google search using "all-in-one brewing"
An Adaptive Brewer’s different abilities does not affect how well they brew. Stock equipment and processes can be adapted to the Adaptive Brewer’s abilities.
Assistive devices are any machines or equipment used to provide accessibility and increase safety during the brewing processes. Good examples of assistive devices used in adaptive sports are swimming pool lifts that lower a non-ambulatory swimmer into a pool, and standing frames that allow wheelchair users to stand up while playing ball. Many municipal governments in the U.S. use adaptive recreation as a way to meet the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), specifically its section dealing with public services. Governments are required by ADA law to provide reasonable accommodation to people with disabilities in order to allow them participation in sports and recreation programs.
